Not just another academic - he officially holds a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago and in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory - but someone at the cutting edge of grid computing. Most of the large hardware and software companies - most notably HP, IBM, Oracle and Sun - have grid projects now but the panel felt the work done in academia is still leading the way and Foster is at or close to the summit of what's being achieved there.
